“Avatar” was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time since January 2010 until it was surpassed by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, but with subsequent re-releases, beginning with China in March 2021, it returned to becoming the highest-grossing film since then. It also became the first film to gross more than $2 billion. Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. The film is also notable for its groundbreaking visual effects and use of 3D technology, which helped to revolutionize the film industry.
