Disney movie Cruella released in 2021, based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. The character Cruella was featured in the 1996 film 101 Dalmatians starring Glenn Close and the subsequent sequel 102 Dalmatians in 2000.
Estella is a young and clever grifter who’s determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. Her mother, Catherine, nicknamed her Cruella, and mother and daughter plan to go to London so that Estella can pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. Halfway there, they come to the Baroness’s house for help, but their mother is accidentally pushed off a cliff by the Baroness’s spotted dog and dies.
Estella, orphaned, comes to London and becomes good friends with two street thugs, Jasper and Horace, and together they steal for a living.
After growing up, Estella showed more and more talent in fashion design, and by chance, she became the assistant of the famous fashion giant Baroness, revealing her unique talent.
The film earned two nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling, winning Best Costume Design. It was also nominated in the former category and won in the latter at the 27th Critics’ Choice Awards and 75th British Academy Film Awards while Emma Stone was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical at the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
