The Patient is a psychological thriller from the minds of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg (The Americans) about a therapist, “Alan Strauss” (Steve Carell), who’s held prisoner by a patient, “Sam Fortner” (Domhnall Gleeson), who reveals himself to be a serial killer. Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.
No, “The Patient” is not based on a true story. The series was inspired by two co-creators, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who experienced therapy and generally found the practice “very interesting”.
The Patient is not expected to return for Season 2, as it was billed as a limited series by FX on Hulu and was only intended for 10 episodes.
