Premiered on Hulu on June 23, 2022, the comedy-drama television series The Bear tells Carmy, a young fine-dining chef, coming home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop. As he fights to transform the shop and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges crew that ultimately reveal themselves as his chosen family.
The sandwich shop interior is copied from the real-life Chicago shop Mr. Beef on Orleans, in River North. The creator was a frequent patron and friends with the son of the owner.
The Bear was nominated for Best Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Additionally, Ayo Edebiri was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
The Bear quickly had viewers talking when it premiered. In July 2022, it was renewed for a second season, which is set to premiere on June 22, 2023, and consist of 10 episodes.

White hinted at the larger story that could be explored in season 2. “To me, the whole first season feels almost like a prelude to what the show actually is,” he explained to GQ, noting that the true journey is Carmy opening up his own restaurant.
Bob Odenkirk, who plays criminal defender Saul Goodman in Better Call Saul, will join the second season, but Odenkirk’s role is still under wraps, but he is said to be playing a “guest role” on the show. Molly Gordon (Shiva Baby) will also be joining the second season. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the season premiere in June to see how this all changes.
