Roku 4 users feel disappointed as they are not able to play Disney Plus on Roku 4 after May 30th 2023. Currently Disney+ supports the following Roku models:

  • Roku 2 (4210X)
  • Roku 3
  • Roku Streaming Stick (3600X, 3800X), Stick+, 4K, 4K+
  • Roku Express, Express+, 4K, 4K+
  • Roku Premiere, Premiere+
  • Roku Ultra, Ultra LT
  • Roku Smart Speaker
  • Roku TV, 2K, 4K, 8K

It’s weird that all of the lower models, 2, 3, etc. working but not the Roku 4. Well, that’s because Roku 4(4400) is a one off player that uses a chipset that no other Roku uses. Since it’s now approaching eight years old, Roku is dropping support for it. Yes, there are a few older devices that are still supported, but they all use the same chipset, so the programming effort is worthwhile for a bit longer.

And while the Roku 4 is 4K (it was their first 4K player) it’s lacking one key feature that virtually all 4K streams include, and that’s HDR. So yes, unfortunately it really is obsolete. Watching HDR content in SDR really looks bad, as it’s dim and the colors are washed out. The only way to get the streaming providers to send an SDR version is to set the screen resolution to 1080, and then you lose the 4K resolution.

Though reluctantly, it is fact that you can’t stream Disney+ on Roku 4 now. Luckily here are 2 alternatives. You can purchase a new Roku device. An Roku Express 4K+ is a good replacement unless you need Ethernet, USB port, Dolby Vision, possibly some higher-end audio. It has plenty of built-in memory (more than the Roku 4), so need for an SD card. The main price is US$39.99, but you might find it cheaper elsewhere.

Another alternative is to download Disney Plus videos to MP4 and then you can watch them on any TV. All you need is Pazu Disney Plus Video Downloader and a USB drive.
