Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

What is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever about?

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.

In a review by Brian Truitt, he eloquently captures the essence of Wakanda Forever: “At its emotional core, though, Wakanda Forever is also a film about the ways people protect their family and heritage, and – like T’Challa’s path in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – figure out where they stand and follow those who came before them.”

Legacy of King T’Challa

Legacy of King T'Challa

At the end of the original Black Panther, King T’Challa revealed the true nature of Wakanda to the world—an advanced nation brimming with technological marvels and unparalleled resources. However, the sequel Wakanda Forever unfolds with a somber and unexpected twist, casting a shadow of sorrow over the kingdom, as an unknown illness claimed the once-mighty Black Panther’s life, leaving his nation vulnerable and mourning the loss of their beloved leader.

T’Challa, the Black Panther, undoubtedly one of the most iconic and beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), stands out as a true beacon of inspiration and admiration. Chadwick Boseman’s exceptional portrayal of this remarkable figure catapulted T’Challa to new realms of significance, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

As the rightful king of Wakanda, he assumes the weighty responsibilities of leadership with grace and wisdom. His unwavering dedication to his people and the protection of Wakanda’s advanced technologies make him a revered guardian, ensuring the prosperity and safety of his nation.

Beyond his regal status, T’Challa embodies a spirit of unparalleled bravery, power, and optimism. Moreover, Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa extends beyond the silver screen, as he became a symbol of inspiration and empowerment in the real world, inspiring audiences to recognize their own potential for greatness, and encouraging viewers to face challenges head-on and believe in the possibility of positive change.

Legacy of King T'Challa

The unexpected and tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, the brilliant actor behind the role of Black Panther, sent shockwaves of sorrow throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its devoted fan base. In the wake of this devastating loss, the production team of Wakanda Forever remained true to their commitment not to recast the character of King T’Challa, honoring Boseman’s memory in a poignant and heartfelt manner.

Within the film, a tribute to T’Challa and Chadwick Boseman takes the form of a magnificent mural that reads: “The King lives and the panther… forever in us.” As T’Challa once expressed the Wakandan belief that death is not an end but rather a transition into something new—a stepping-off point into uncharted territories.

A new foe from the undersea nation of Talokan

a new foe

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduces a particularly powerful foe from the comics – Namor, the underwater ruler of Talokan, an enchanting undersea kingdom infused with the rich aesthetics of Meso-American culture. The filmmakers have brought this gorgeous underwater kingdom to life, crafting every intricate detail to immerse viewers in a world of unparalleled beauty.

Killing him will risk eternal war. Namor, portrayed as a solid and complex villain, poses a significant challenge for the Wakandan warriors. However, there is more to Namor than meets the eye. Like the Wakandans, he also struggles to protect his people and preserve his heritage, grapple with his place in the grand tapestry of history, and determine where his allegiance truly lies. This conflict gives depth and nuance to Namor’s character, transcending the traditional boundaries of a straightforward antagonist.

Interestingly, Namor is known by another name in the film—K’ul’ku’kan, “the feathered serpent god.” This evocative title highlights the mythical and spiritual dimensions of the character, adding an extra layer of mystique and significance to his role in the narrative.

The introduction of Namor not only elevates the stakes for the Wakandan warriors but also presents an intriguing parallel between him and Shuri, T’Challa’s brilliant sister. Both characters carry the weight of their respective legacies and grapple with the tragic aspects of their pasts.

Rise of new heroes and who is the new Black Panther?

Only the most broken people can be great leaders. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever delves into the profound theme that only those who have experienced brokenness can ascend to greatness in their roles as leaders.

The film particularly focuses on Shuri, the brilliant and beloved little sister of T’Challa, and one of the smartest people in the Marvel universe. Shuri’s evolution from a grief-stricken individual to a formidable leader becomes a central focus of the film. At the film’s beginning, Shuri is grappling with the overwhelming grief of losing her brother. As new challenges emerge and the weight of loss bears down upon her, Shuri undergoes a transformative journey that leads her to embrace her destiny as the new Black Panther and the protector of Wakanda.

However, Shuri’s journey is not a solitary one. Along her path, she finds a kindred spirit and a powerful new ally in Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, a brilliant MIT student and genius inventor who follows in the legendary footsteps of Tony Stark to craft her own armored suit. Riri’s exceptional inventing prowess draws unwanted international attention, placing both her and Shuri in perilous situations. As their paths intertwine, Shuri and Riri are compelled to join forces, pooling their remarkable intellects and resources to defend themselves against a host of formidable adversaries.

Rise of new heroes

In the captivating end-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, when Shuri visits Nakia in Haiti, she meets her nephew Toussaint, the son of Nakia and the late T’Challa. Toussaint has been raised far from the spotlight, shielded from the complexities of his Wakandan heritage. The boy also bears his Wakandan name T’Challa — just like his dad.

Both names carry a powerful history and significant meaning. Toussaint is a reference to Toussaint Louverture, the legendary leader of the Haitian Revolution, who was a former slave and later led the only successful slave revolt in modern history. Louverture’s extraordinary leadership and unwavering determination earned him the title of “the first Black superhero of the modern age” among historians.

T’Challa is a tribute to his late father. The name hints at a potential future that someday the young boy might follow in his family’s footsteps and assume the mantle of Black Panther, safeguarding the kingdom and upholding the values his father cherished.

The end-credits scene, infused with both power and emotion, becomes a poignant tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, the remarkable actor who portrayed T’Challa. Simultaneously, the scene offers a compelling glimpse into the future, hinting at the emergence of a new generation of heroes who will carry the torch and shape the destiny of Wakanda.
