Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2022 superhero film based on the legendary Marvel Comics character Thor. It is the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and the fourth Thor movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“Thor: Love and Thunder” finds the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – one of self-discovery. But his efforts are interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Thor: Love and Thunder is a superhero movie and also a love comedy at the same time. The whole film is a force for good. It is rousing, refreshing, and hilarious as well. Thor: Love and Thunder may not revolutionize the overarching MCU storyline, but it weaves an ode to the trials and tribulations of our beloved hero.
For Thor, family expectations, personal growth, obligations, missions, and – love – have always been throughout his heroic existence. There is certainly no exception in Thor: Love and Thunder, and these timeless themes resurface as in the former Thor movies. Thor is already a veteran superhero involved in saving the universe for many years, so the film’s storytelling ensures that Thor’s development remains on his established path, and that’s perfectly fine.
Natalie Portman makes an excellent return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder, as she seizes the opportunity to showcase her exceptional talent. The film delicately reinstates Jane into the narrative and thoughtfully adds a more profound bond between Jane and Thor. Whether in her human form or her heroic state, Portman’s performance always reminds us why Jane’s return is such a cause for celebration.
Currently, there are altogether four movies in the Thor film series. Thor also appears in all four Avengers films.
At the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, a card shows up with “Thor will return” on it. What does it mean? Another stand-alone Thor movie, is Thor showing up in a future Marvel movie, or will it be Chris Hemsworth’s version of Thor? Nevertheless, at least we know Thor will be one of those to keep going of the original six Avengers.
Thor: Love and Thunder is easy to watch without seeing the Thor movies that came before. But if you want to know more about Thor’s journey so far, watch the following movies in chronological order and enjoy more of Thor’s path and timeline through the entire MCU.
As of May 2023, we still don’t know whether there will be a Thor 5 because the film hasn’t been announced. Also, Thor 5 is not among the movies currently scheduled for the MCU’s Phase 5 and 6.
Based on the information so far, if Chris Hemsworth returns for another Thor, it might be his MCU exit, as Hemsworth told Vanity Fair in November 2022 that he thinks his next outing as Thor should be the last. He also said that he’s completely open to reprising his role as Thor if there is something unique, fresh, and unexpected.
It’s also worth considering Hemsworth has opened up about health issues that could affect his desire to continue in the role.
In his interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth added: “You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know — am I at that stage? Who knows?”
