How to Get Netflix on a Non-Smart TV

With the success of services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, streaming movies and TV shows has never been more popular. You can watch whatever you want, whenever you want on Mac, PC mobile device and TV. Smart TVs usually come with apps built-in. But don’t worry if you don’t have a smart TV. You can still stream movies and TV shows using a streaming device, games console, or your computer.

To get Netflix on a non-smart TV, connect a streaming device such as Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, or Amazon Fire TV Stick. Alternatively, use a game console, or connect your computer to your TV.

Option 1 Via a streaming device

Amazon Fire Stick

The Amazon Fire Stick plugs into the back of your TV and lets you download apps like Netflix. It also comes with an “Alexa Remote” that lets you search with your voice.

  1. From the main screen, select Search.
  2. Enter Netflix into the search box, then select Netflix.
  3. Select Free or Download.
  4. Select Open.
  5. Select Sign In and enter your Netflix account.
  6. Search and play the movie/TV show you want.

Google Chromecast

Before you can watch Netflix on your Chromecast, you must first install and set up the Google Home app on your mobile device.

  1. Plug in the Chromecast to your TV.
  2. Connect your mobile device to the same Wi-Fi network with your Chromecast.
  3. Install Google Home app on your mobile device.
  4. Open the Google Home app and set up the Chromecast.

Once you’ve finished setting up Chromecast, you can start casting Netflix to your TV.

  1. Launch the Netflix app on your mobile device.
  2. Select the Cast icon from the upper or lower right side of the screen.
  3. Select your TV from the list of available devices.
  4. Play the TV show or movie.

Apple TV

  1. Select App Store from the home screen.
  2. Search for Netflix and select Get to install.
  3. Launch the Netflix app and sign in.
  4. Play the TV show or movie.

Option 2 Via a gaming console

If you have a PS Vita, PS3, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, you can use the game console to watch Netflix on your TV. Here we will take PS5 as example.

  1. From the home screen, navigate to the Media section.
  2. Select All Apps, navigate to Video and music apps, and select the Netflix icon.
  3. Select Download. The Netflix app will now begin downloading.
  4. Select Sign in on the Netflix home screen.
  5. Play the movie or TV show you want to watch.

Option 3 Connect a Laptop to your Non-Smart TV

If your TV has an HDMI port, you can connect your laptop to your TV with an HDMI cable and stream Netflix content from the laptop to the TV. A wired connection between your laptop and TV ensures better picture quality and shorter lag time.

  1. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into your HDMI input on your laptop.
  2. Plug the other end of the cable into one of the HDMI inputs on your TV.
  3. Using the remote control, select the input that corresponds to where you plugged in the cable (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, etc.).
  4. Now play Netflix movies/TV shows on your laptop and the video and audio will be transmited to your TV.

Option 4 Play Netflix videos on Non-Smart TV via USB drive
